A small site refresh, and the addition of RSS
By Ellie Winters on 30/10/2025 ---------------------------------------------------------------- This site may look a little different to you! How did we get here? Yesterday as of the time of writing (thu 30th oct 2025), I was scrolling the internet and saw the idea of RSS. The idea of RSS isnt new to me however at the time previously I was maining an unstable UNIX-like distribution, Arch Linux, and was spending more time on the OS than other projects. I recently switched to using Fedora 42 (upgraded to 43 yesterday), leaving more time for other projects, like finally refreshing this site, and adding an RSS feed which I wanted to do, alongside importing other peoples feeds. I spent the majority of yesterday setting up the RSS aggregator preinstalled on the KDE desktop environment, and importing the feeds of many I find to have the same interests as me, or have generally interesting feeds. This obviously includes trending ACARS drama. I believe RSS is one of the few truly modern aspects of the world wide web, people tend to see enshitification and see it as somehow better, and RSS is the complete opposite of that. Its truly a tool for modern times. RSS doesnt have a computer trying to learn about you in all the wrong ways possible, isnt trying to serve you advertisements, isnt trying to spam you with bullshit. Dont like a feed? Simply delete it. Its just the feeds you want as they come. How do I add your blog/diary as an RSS feed? This site now contains a direct link to plug into your RSS aggregator. You can add it here. Copy the link from you web browser or copy https://thewintersgirls.neocities.org/web/diary/rss/rss.xml and plug it into your prefered aggregator. Its that simple. You can also add my rambling RSS feed, which has posts more often about literally anything that comes to my brain. Linked here. Will this replace your text based site? Absolutely not. The purpose of the RSS feed and the text based site are completely different. The purpose of the text based site is to provide a usable experience for those still browsing on terminal based browsers, or for those with a very slow connection. For example, trying to dial in on a thinkpad connected to a Motorola MicroTAC dialing from a really weak signal on the side of route 66. The purpose of the RSS feed is to allow a person to easily receive the latest posts as and when its uploaded. Typically these will be in text format but some images may be included every once in a while. The text based version of this site will instead just display a link to the image to be viewed on either another personal computer, or at a later time. Whats next for this site? Not actually sure to be honest. Nothing immediately as im currently migrating from Windows 3.11 for Workgroups to Windows 95, and also updating some programs, as well as installing some new ones here and there. My current todo list includes the addition of my own 88x31 button for other people to use, if anyone has any other suggestions do contact me and let me know. Go Back... |
